Learn about the Nordic Easter tradition of decorating pussy willow switches. When Christianity came to rural Norway, Finland, and Sweden around 1200 A.D., the ancient land-based traditions were kept in families and blended with the new church practices.
Påskris, or Passover Switch/Tree, is one such tradition. In this class, which is a combination of lecture and hands-on crafts, you will make a påskris and learn about the meaning of symbols of this tradition. You will also learn the folk songs, charms, and practices for each day of Holy Week as you decorate your switch.
Christians in warmer climates used palm tree fronds for their celebrations. People of the northlands didn’t have access to palms, so they used pussy willows. However, when Easter comes early, as it does this year, pussy willows aren’t ready yet. So, switches from the base of lindens or river birch can also be used.For the crafting portion of the class, switches will be decorated with bits of wool or cotton fluff. Feathers, seed pods, and other decorations of colorful string, yarn, or ribbon create a lovely sight to brighten your home during this gray portion of spring.
