🎶 Poetry reading, song, and dance celebrating the Kalevala
What is the Kalevala?
First compiled by Elias Lönnrot in 1835, the Kalevala is a collection of Finnish folk poetry that weaves together ancient myths, heroic tales, and magical adventures. This epic has played a vital role in shaping Finnish national identity and inspiring Finland’s language, arts, and culture. Its influence extends beyond Finland, inspiring composers like Sibelius and writers like J.R.R. Tolkien in their works.
Step into the Story
From 5:00-7:00 pm, enter the Joan & Walter Mondale Galleri for a Kalevala Day celebration featuring Runos / Finnish American poets Lynette Reini-Grandell and Morrey Nellis, along with Kari Tauring. Through rhythmic poetry, song, and storytelling, they will bring Finland’s cherished epic to life.
✨ Join the Community Dance!
Kari Tauring will lead a community song circle dance, a non-partnered, all-ages tradition that invites everyone to take part—no experience required! Just bring clean shoes and a joyful spirit.
